Surprise!

Woke up to this lovely surprise Monday morning. I was at home, still in my pj's, when my contractor called me to ask me if I knew anything about the lid of the septic tank falling in. I said No. He said that his plumbing sub had called to say that there was a hole in the septic tank lid, and he's doing what he can to make the situation a safe working environment again, so to be careful when I visited the site.

Of course, I had to go see for myself and inspect the damage. From the look of things, someone drove over the septic tank, that cracked the lid, which caused it to fall in. No one wanted to own up to driving over it of course, but none the less, Bill, my contractor, informed me that it had never been closed off properly.

The plumber verified that the house is no long on septic tank but is hooked up to the cities main sewer line. A small blessing. That left me with two options.

Option 1: To purchase a new lid and have it installed, but to make sure that grass didn't grow over it, so that everyone knew it was there. Possibly risking someone driving it over again, that didn't know any better. Plus the risk of someone falling into the septic tank if it broke again.

Option 2: Have the septic tank drained and then filled with gravel. The safest option but a bit more expensive.

So I asked my contractor... "Bill, what do we need to do to make this right."

His response. "Drain it and fill it up."

I tend to agree with him. Now I'm waiting on a quote to see what the final $ amount is going to be, hoping to not spend more than $1000. But in the back of my mind, I could hear both my dad and brother agree, to do it the right way.

When life throws you surprises, roll with it. I believe that nothing in this life happens without reason. Plus I want to do a good job and the right thing in this case, not the cheap thing. I can save money elsewhere.
